From Scotty Moore's site, here is info on the Jefferson County Armory, now known as Louisville Gardens, about Elvis appearance in 1956, complete with film footage courtesy of the LPD. Also in the article is a link to the Rialto Theater where Elvis had appeared a year earlier. Beecher Frank and "Pat" Cowley are also mentioned. scottymoore.net/louisville56.html

Very informative and very well done. Viewing the LPD footage was especially cool.
Growing up in Louisville's south end, I had often heard the "rumors" of Elvis' grandfather living somewhere in the neighborhood and of secret visits made by Elvis. It was said that at night, one could see numerous photos of Elvis on the walls of the home from the street.

From what I've heard, Elvis' grandfather lived on Beaver St., which is a short street that runs off Ashland. I've also heard about many secret visits he would make. I read an article that said that when Elvis and his parents would visit, before Elvis was famous, that he would take his guitar and go to Iroquois Park and sit on a park bench and sing. The story said he was drawing a crowd of girls, even then. Don't know if that was true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Wow! You just triggered a neuron in my photographic memory. Elvis' grandfather did live on Beaver which ran south off of Ashland, but I can't remember what street anchored it from the south. I was raised by a single parent and lived in the Iroquois Government Housing Project, which Ashland led into from the east and becomes Squires Drive where Lentz Avenue joins from the south.
Elvis' grandfather was often seen at the Hazelwood Shopping Center, which is/was off Taylor Boulevard, at Bicknell, just 2 blocks south of Manitau (which is the street which anchors Beaver from the south). He was always referred to as Elvis' grandfather and I never knew his name (Jesse Presley) until I saw Scotty Moore's web page.
Looks like I'm still learning something new every day.
