Quick...what do all of these songs have in common?
I Still Believe In Tomorrow - John & Ann Ryder
Ray Of Hope - Rascals
Hayride - Saturday Morning Cartoon Show
Down At Lulu's - Ohio Express
Prayer Meetin' - Willie Mitchell
Groovy Girl - Waterproof Tinkertoy
Listen Listen - Merry-Go-Round
Do I Love You - Magic Ring
Sometimes You Just Can't Win - Mouse & The Traps
The Singer Sang His Song - Bee Gees
Time To Say Goodbye - Third Rail
Time To Be A Woman - Bobby Lyle
My Aim Is To Please - Executives
Love Machine - Roosters
Baby You Come Rolling Across My Mind - Peppermint Trolley
1. They were all Top 10 hits on WKLO in 1968 and 1969.
2. I never heard of them -- although I'm familiar with some of the groups.
I can find numerous other examples of Top 10 hits WKLO played that I never heard of in every year of survey represented on the site. Of course, I wasn't in Louisville (or aware of WKLO) in the '60s, but it's interesting to look back and see the songs that were big local hits that never made the cut to the national "safe lists" that most oldies stations played in the 80s, 90s and 00s.
All-in-all, I've had a good time scrolling through all of the text-formatted surveys from the 1960s we just added. Even though nearly all of them are have scanned JPG versions already on the site, it's easier to look through the music lists when they're all on one or two pages.
Something else that's interesting: look at the pick hits on the WKLO and WAKY charts and see how "right-on-the-money" the station's programming staff were -- or weren't. Monday morning quarterbacking can be fun.
Of course, in my music director days I've picked my share of stiffs. Luckily, there's no printed evidence of my goofs remaining...I hope. :-)
