Were there other top 40 radio stations in Louisville in the 60's and 70's, besides WKLO and WAKY? What station came the closest to challenging WKLO and WAKY in this market durning that timeframe? Sorry for the constant questions, but I am a radio nut, probably should have been in the radio biz. Thanks.

To me, there was only WAKY & WKLO. Hi95 came along in '74 and then KJ-100 in '79. LRS became established as an AOR in... I believe... '72. That was about it.

I believe, in the early 60's, WOWI, (1570) New Albany also Top-40 for a short while. Does anyone else remember it?

This may go back to my pre-listening days, but I was thinking WAVE 970 (now WAVG) used to be Top 40. But for sure the 3 mentioned were, WAKY, WKLO, WQHI. I always will remember WLRS's Big Six (name?) Bridge that used to light up the station logo at Christmas. Always looked forward to seeing that at night. Something is telling me I've got the name wrong on the bridge .

It is the "Big Four" Railroad bridge so named for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad which was a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad. It was closed in June 1968 and the ends were removed in August 1974. I'm also a railroad junky along with classic music and radio.

...and I always wondered where the ends went. Is the LRS logo still up there or did they take it down? I'm usually not up there at night anymore and in the daytime if I'm crossing the bridge I don't have time to try to see if I see it or else Mark Travis will be saying "Mark Travis with the Swope Discount Center Skywatch 84 Traffic, we have a multi-car pile-up on the Kennedy Bridge..." ;D

I don't think it has been up there for a while now. On another topic, I woner why Mark Travis has not been in his helicopter for about a year now...and they call it "skywatch" traffic

CC has done nothing but ruin Louisville radio, 30 years from now, no one will ever know that 1080 and 790 were once radio monsters in this town, because tradition means squat to them.

Chad, they could be doing what I was doing in Virginia Beach at WODC. Talk about cheap, when I would do the morning drive, they would have me call the traffic line and write down the recorded updates and deliver them on the air. I felt cheap! Wouldn't be surprised if that's what some stations do and use a helicopter sound effects bed! I would try to give alternate routes to make it not sound so creepy!
Oh, well, they had a shoestring budget!

The late Ron Clay, who did a show with Terry Meiners on WLRS and WQMF, once did a bit where he was doing traffic reports from 'coptor one.' He would merely read traffic reports over the air while rapidly pounding on his chest with the palms of his hands. What an effect. Try it and take note of not only how your palms sound as they beat against your chest, but also what this does to your voice as you speak. I've been wondering to this day if Dik Gilbert, Mark Travis and others were actually ever in a helicoptor. Note: I had to change the spelling of Gilbert's first name because ProBoard thinks I'm being nasty.

Thanks ALOT, Travis! :-( Now my chest hurts. As I'm working as we speak here at the Point, I'm lucky no one here saw me!

Maybe it's me, but "thingy" sounds worse. Still, I like this board. I especially like the way it keeps track of 'read' and 'unread' messages without the need of placing cookies on your machine. This allows me to look in from work, or anywhere else, and identify new messages right from the get-go. To those of you who only view or post as 'guests' you will need to become a member to enjoy the message tracking features I described above. It's free, but if you enjoy looking in here as much as I do, please send what you can to John Quincy to cover the cost of maintaining this and the 79WAKY site.
