Even though I was primarily a WAKY fanatic I did begin to check out WKLO in the mid to late '70s. In '74, Rusty Rodgers and I were doing radio shows at the University of Louisville's campus radio station (WXKE 570 AM) which utilized carrier-current technology to broadcast into the dorms via the electrical wiring within the walls. It could also be picked up just about anywhere on campus if you parked your car next to any of the street lights that were scattered about.
Rusty got a job at WKLO doing news and introduced me to Jackson Smith (Gary Griffin) who was also the program director for WQXE in Elizabethtown. Gary hired me to do WQXE (or Quicksie, as it was called) and I had a great time there. I also met Bob Cline (Bob Cline Drinkin' Wine) through Rusty. Bob Cline was a real character and a very likeable guy.
One night as I was listening to Bob on WKLO, Paul Simon's 'Kodachrome' was nearing its extro when suddenly I heard Bob singing along with the music ('Kodachrome' speeds up considerably towards the end) but the words were obscene, profane and just downright vulgar. Bob was one of those jocks that switches the mic ON a bit in advance of the extro and then pots it up when ready to speak. Unknown to Bob, the mic pot was ALREADY UP when he threw the switch and because he was not directly on top of the mic he did not hear himself in his headphones. Fortunately, Bob's words were quite faint on the air because Simon's music was still hot on the VU meter and Bob was not singing directly into the mic. Still, I could make out what he was saying and he knew the words had gone out when I called up and told him. How else would I have known since I wasn't there?
Bob fell silent on the phone for what seemed to be 15 seconds and then began saying, "I hope (insert program director's name here) wasn't listening" over & over & over. Apparently, the PD was not listening and nothing ever came of the incident. Bob Cline was a character and I'd love to know where he is and what he's doing today.
WOO-HOO!! ;D
