Tom Rakes sent this to me on April 13, 2005. I know part of the answer, but I bet somebody who actually lived in the area could do a better job answering it!
I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. Growing up in New Albany I remember the WKLO transmitter site located on Daisy Lane (the site is still there). As I seem to recall, the concrete building that housed the transmitter and equipment originally had a large picture window (which you can see the outline of). At one time didn't WKLO actually broadcast occasionally from there at times? Something keeps sticking in my mind that they did some night broadcasting from the site and you could watch the DJ from the window just like you could at the studio in Louisville. Thanks for your time and two great sites in WKLO and WAKY.

I worked at the WKLO site from 1961 to 1978. There were several periods of time when the program was broadcast from the Concrete building. Early 60's Sunday Mornings and evenings came from the transmitter. Later, probably 68 thru maybe 71 Jim Rueff did the all night show from "the cave" because it sounded a bit like a cave with those conrete walls. In those days the FCC required a person with a First Class Radio license be at the transmitter 24 hrs per day. Several of us went to college in the daytime (UofL Speed Engineering School) and worked at night...we had 12 hr shifts...4AM to 4PM or reverse. Some of us almost had our 2nd home....may have seen us washing our cars and mowing the grass. There is a lot of grass to mow. There were six engineers on staff. Now Clear channel has two guys taking care of 10 stations!

Yo, Pete! It's about time you showed up. I'm willing to bet that you probably have the original WKLO transmitter on display in your livingroom (just kidding) but I do hope you'll continue to join us on this board (as well as the one for WAKY) and share some stories with us.
